Functional bonding and shielding for industrial networks

7 April 2024

An introductory lecture on the functional bonding and shielding requirements for Industrial communications networks. Presented by Kyle Roos of Industrial Data Xchange.

Industrial communication networks such as PROFIBUS, PROFINET and other Industrial Ethernet and Fieldbus systems are regularly affected by sources of interference caused by EMI. In this webinar, we discuss the different sources of EMI and how this interference can be prevented.

The following topics are discussed:

  • EMI fundamentals (EMI vs EMC, coupling and electrostatic discharge)
  • Types of bonding systems
  • Active and passive shielding
  • Connections of DC supply circuits to the bonded network
  • Appropriate motor cables

References to the audit checklist and some of the concepts mentioned in this video originate from: “Functional Bonding and Shielding of PROFIBUS and PROFINET – PROFIBUS Nutzerorganisation e.V. – 8.102”.
